The People of Manipur
The population of Manipur Comprises
different social groups. They are Meeteis/Meiteis, Nagas, Kukis
meitei pangal and Miscellanous groups. The entire population of Manipur distributed into two regions:
the hill and the valley population. The valley people supposed to be the
descendants of four old tribes called Khuman, Luwang, Moirang and Maithai. The
hill people are broadly divided into Naga and Kuki tribes.
Meetei/ Meitei Yek Salai (Clan of Meetei)
There are 7 clans of Meetei/Meitei. They are

Tribal Groups
The hills are inhabited mainly by the tribal.
There are 33 government recognized tribes (in Manipur) which is either fall
under the Nagas or the kukis, the two different conglomerates of Manipur
tribals. All the tribes generally communicate in their own dialects among the
same ethnic groups while communication between different group is carried out
in Meiteilon or Manipuri Languagem the official language of Manipur.

Pangal (Manipuri Muslims)
The Pangals (Meitei Pangal) are an ethnoreligious group. They
follow Islam. The word “Pangal” is
believed to have taken from the word “Bengal”. The early Muslims settles
are migrated form Bengal during the reign of king Khagemba.
Manipuri Brahmins (Meitei Brahmin)
Manipuri Brahmins or Meitei Brahmins,
also called Bamons by the locals, are those Brahmins who reside mostly in the
valley areas of Manipur. They started migrating from the time of king Kyamba.
The Brahmins in Manipur have been totally absorbed in the Meitei Community that
they are regarded as Meiteis.
